A. The average age to start piano lessons is five years old and six years old for all other instruments. However, children below the recommended starting age can be assessed to determine if they are able to start music lessons. Some important criteria are that the child should know the alphabet, how to count and be able to concentrate and follow directions.
A. Yes. We believe that introducing children to music at an early stage is beneficial in many ways. Our specially elaborated programs for the youngest ones are developed to engage children’s natural creativity and self expression in age appropriate and joyful activities that provide a basic musical foundation while enhancing their overall development, strengthening their fine and gross motor skills, improving coordination, ability of focused listening, social skills and much more.
A. Yes. It is never too late to start learning a music instrument, as long as you have the passion for music, the patience and willingness to put in the time for it. We are happy to have many adult students from beginners to advance.
A. No. The student will be assessed to determine his/her level, so they can continue from that point. Sometimes, the teacher may need to go through the already learned material, in order to ensure there are no missing gaps and all the fundamentals are correctly learned.
A. There are many benefits to every instrument that will improve the student’s mental ability, memory and coordination. It is always recommended to choose the instrument that the student has the most interest in learning. For those who are not that familiar with the music instruments, we offer free 20 minutes trial lessons. This will give them the opportunity to be introduced to several instruments, before choosing the instrument they like to learn the most.
A. Yes, it is important. In order for the students to progress, they should have their own instruments, so they can practice at home. We can assist you in choosing the most suitable instrument to start with. We are aware that buying a piano or a full drum set might be a big investment for a beginner student. Therefore, students may start by practicing at home on an electric keyboard, instead of a piano, and a practice drum pad, instead of full drums set.
A. There may be many reasons why a child could lose interest in his/her instrument. One of the most common reasons is when the material gets harder and the child faces the natural difficulties of learning something new, along with the frustration of having to repeat and practice more. As educators, we give our best for all our students to achieve their full potential. We believe that every child and every case is unique; therefore an open dialog between parents, student and us is essential to find the best solution. There are always options to continue your child’s music education, weather it requires adjusting their practice agenda, finding more suitable lesson timing, or even switching to another instrument.
We encourage all parents to support their child and the teacher in order for the child to succeed.
A. Based on our experience a few lessons are not enough time for a student to get to know the instrument, teacher, and to see results. It takes time to process what is learned and transform it into a physical ability.
A. There is no set time on how long it takes to learn an instrument. This varies from student to student, depending on the individual abilities, the level of commitment, frequency of attending lessons and time spent practicing at home. Students will be able to play some simple tunes from the very beginning; however playing an instrument involves a lot of physical skills, which require time, persistence and repetition to build. We are confident that students constantly improve with continuous lessons and practice. Music is an infinite universe, depending on each student and how far he/she would like to reach. We are here to support them on every step of their journey.
A. All students are expected to have their own instruments, as well as all necessary accompanying items applicable to their instrument, such as tuners, metronomes, music stands, foot stools, capos, guitar straps, shoulder rests, etc. Students are also required to purchase all the necessary books and learning materials.
A. Based on our experience, we recommend that parents do not sit in during their child’s lesson, due to the fact that children are easily distracted and often end up focusing more on the parents, rather than the teacher. Each room is designed with a viewing window, to provide the parents with the comfort of seeing their child. However, each child is different, and in some cases, the teacher might recommend for one parent to attend the lessons, in order to support his/her child. In regards to group lessons, parents are not allowed to sit in, as that will destruct and affect the whole group.
A. We offer music group lessons for the youngest ones, as we believe, that at this age kids learn best when they are in a group. This allows them to acquire knowledge and make friends, while interacting with children of the same age, in an enjoyable and pleasant atmosphere.
When it comes to learning a music instrument, we believe that the best way is one-on-one, as this will give the student the full attention of the teacher, for the entire lesson. Furthermore, the teacher can plan and adapt the lesson according to each student’s individual needs, learning pace and style.
However, we take into consideration that sometimes siblings, parent and child or friends might like to try and join together. Therefore we have the option for some instruments to join as semi-individual, which gives students the opportunity to form their own group of 2 to 3 students maximum, and start together.
A. All our students are encouraged to audition for Brooklyn Melodies Music Center Choir, after completing one semester of lessons in any instrument.
For all our Guitar, Violin and Saxophone students, we are happy to offer the opportunity of joining one of Brooklyn Melodies Music Center Ensembles, after having passed the first grade exam in their respective instrument.
A. The lessons should be scheduled at least once a week. However, without doubt, it will certainly be more beneficial to attend the lessons twice (or more) a week, if the student’s agenda allows.
As the student progresses above grade five, we highly recommend taking twice or more a week, as only one lesson a week is definitely insufficient to cover all the relevant material.
A. All our teachers are thoroughly and carefully selected, and highly qualified, holding diplomas from well-known and high standard Conservatories in Europe and Asia. They are proficient and innovative in their specialty, incorporating the international proven teaching methods, with the individual approach required for each learner, from beginner to advance and from the youngest to adults. Brooklyn Melodies Music Center teachers are all dedicated to their profession and committed to the success and satisfaction of each and every student.
